Review of "THE START OF THE END OF THE WORLD"

"Steve has produced a rock album with echoes of Chris Rea and the marvellous Nick Lowe throughout. Touches of tasteful layered keys and rock solid rhythmn guitar support his straightforward vocal style. "Tokyo Rodeo" puts you in mind of Kim Wilde circa Kids in America and it is likely there is a future for Steve in supplying top notch material for the numerous singers, encouraged by the X Factor style programmes, in need of mainstream, radio friendly tunes."

Review of “TEARJERKER” by MUSICIAN magazine. (The Journal of the Musicians’ Union)

Yorkshire based Steve Larkman is a multi-instrumentalist who has written, performed and produced this album of 15 songs which focus on matters of the heart and the vagaries of modern life in a variety of musical styles. I was immediately struck by the range of his singing which in the first track Thin White Dove moves from high and soaring to deep and throaty with considerable ease. There is no doubt however that Steve’s strength lies in his pop/rock writing. In fact, the album presents a great opportunity for Steve to approach targeted publishers, as many of the recordings here trigger thoughts as to who could tackle specific material, Remember would be a perfect vehicle for Suggs with its catchy top line and bittersweet sentiment, Park Avenue leads into Springsteen territory circa Tunnel of Love via a chordal keyboard motif yet this is supported by a very contemporary rhythm pattern which makes for an interesting juxtaposition. If Steve can get the CD in front of the right decision maker, I believe it is extremely likely you will be hearing one of his well-crafted songs on a radio near you before long. - Keith Ames

Review of “TEARJERKER” in Logo magazine

Often, singer/songwriters fall down in one of two areas: the singing, or the songwriting. Pretty crucial, huh? Yorkshire’s Steve Larkman possesses strength in both areas; his voice is a rich, multi-tonal vessel as comfortable in the gutter as it is up with the angels, while his writing is simultaneously complex and simple. If comparisons are to be made, try Paul Kelly and Boo Hewerdine; the former for the rhythmic essence of his lines, the latter for the simple humanity of his subjects. Tearjerker therefore works equally well as a publishers demo and as a draw for his live shows; either way, it’s likely that you’ll be seeing the name Steve Larkman attached to a serious deal very soon. - Michael Ornadet
